I got mentioned in PCG

August 5, 2009

Hi everybody this is reprint of the mention I got in PCG issue 204 on page 60 in the latter of the month (with kind permission from Tim) I am extremely happy about being mentioned in PCG, anyway here is the Letter in full: (I didn’t even have to bribe anybody, sorry for all those who have to sift through the letter in the name of my self-aggrandisement) (also quick point all mentions of me by name are in Blue)

I never wanted to get into MMO’s. They were never my thing. But after several nudges from my brother I decided to dip into the MMO pool. I signed up for EVE Online and have been having a absolute  blast with it. The game is hugely indulging and I wait up at night just to finish a new skill and try it out. The other day I was off picking up a new skill I had bought and warped to “Lisbaetanne” system. I collected my skill and was warping off when I was attacked by a rogue pirate named Lord Tev. His superior ship blew me to pieces and I was gone. I explained the attack over the PCG channel. Wookie 1 from the channel then contacted me and transferred 1.5 million ISK into my account. I was overcome. I would just like to personally thank Wookie 1. This I guess is what MMO’s are about:companionship and shared experiences.

Josh (its a pity he used his real name as I have absolutely no idea who this was)

What a great story of Gamer kindness. It’s particularly nice to hear of it happen in EVE, which can sometimes like a cold and inhospitable place (?). The sheer amount you can lose in a surprise attack is what makes EVE so intimidating to new players, so it warms our space-cockles when a fellow player can negate it with a single gift. We’re glad the PC Gamer community is becoming a place for that.

PCG

I would just like to again say how happy I am to be in PCG thanks Josh (whoever you may be).  Also thank you PCG for printing his letter I am truly honoured to be in this months issue. (can you tell I gave Tim the link)

The L4D2 Argument

July 13, 2009

Hi everybody

I was thinking about the huge public outcry by people when Valve announced Left 4 Dead 2 and the boycott groups that resulted and there was one unifying thread between all of these people.

That none of them had actually played the game first or even in some cases even seen screen-shots of it. Putting aside the relative arguments about whether Valve is right or not (since I would be here all day), people just decided to take exception to Valve announcing a sequel so soon after L4D without actually pausing and thinking “wait, maybe I should see when the game gets released and then make my decision on whether its a good game or not” (I personally think yes, because L4D was a brilliant game and there is no reason to believe any differently about a sequel).

The only real suggestion I would make would be that Valve makes L4D2 backwards compatible, I have no problem with Valve deciding that L4D needed a sequel so soon, because ultimately they didn’t sign in blood saying that there would be no sequel.

Also people seem to just want to argue with Valve because they are such a big company, caused by I feel a basic jealousy about Valve’s success, creating a situation where people make their decision based on pre-formed prejudices, that can only bias their final decision.

Coming back to the game itself I think that Valve has earned the right for everybody to just wait and see.

One interesting thought, what if Valve was deliberately  making an unpopular decision so that loads of people would start talking about their game they could even be planning to stage a caving in to public demand. Anyway let me know what you think.

Bye everybody
